“Reconciliation, Protection, Accountability”:  The Safe Environment Policies of the Diocese of Honolulu,  originally published as To Offer Healing, To Restore Trust: the Diocese of Honolulu Responds to the Sex Abuse Crisis in January 2004.

Electronic copy of this document is available:

In the Charter for the Protection Children and Young People (the “Charter”), the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (“USCCB”) expresses its commitment to working with parents, educators, civil authorities, and various organizations in the  protection of children and youth.

Responding to the call for accountability, the Diocese of Honolulu provides background screening and training for clergy, religious and adult laity, including volunteers, employees and independent contractors, in the prevention of and recognition of child abuse.  Adults learn to recognize signs and symptoms of abuse, the responsibilities of mandated and ethical reporters and how to report alleged child abuse.  Children and youth are assured that they are made in God’s image and likeness and have a right to a safe, caring environment.  Their training focuses on personal safety skills, recognition of possible abusive relationships and the importance of identifying trusted adults.

We at St. John Apostle and Evangelist Catholic Church work to ensure that all adults teaching, supervising, or volunteering with our children, meet the standards as listed above.

Our Parish Safe Environment Liaison in cooperation with the Pastor is tasked to ensure compliance with the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People, USCCB.
