Confirmation Program

Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist are the three sacraments of Christian initiation. Baptism enables us to be born into new life in Christ; Confirmation strengthens those born in Christ by giving them the Holy Spirit; the Eucharist, the Bread of life, keeps alive those born in Christ (CCC 1275). Of the three the Eucharist is the goal, being the “source and summit” or the highest celebration of the Church (LG 11, CCC1324). The Christian initiation process is the guiding principle that shapes this Confirmation program. Though the confirmandis are baptized and have been participating in the celebration of the Eucharist, the program tries to link Confirmation with the other two sacraments, so as not to mistake Baptism and Eucharist as sacraments for children, and Confirmation for adults. The distinct giftedness of the Sacrament of Confirmation challenges the candidates to live their Baptismal promises and seek regularly nourishment from the Eucharist.
The Christian community is the proper place for initiation into mature Christian living. This program is not detached from the parish. Rather it forms an integral part of the parish life where liturgical celebrations, faith formation programs and parish ministries define its life and spirit. The confirmands are exposed to these areas where they gradually live their faith “publicly” by participating in them. The parish members are therefore resources for witnessing to the faith and stewards of the confirmandis in their journey of faith (Sacramental Guidelines 36).
